More than 40 million people in the United States live with chronic lung disease, and shortness of breath is one of the most troubling symptoms caused by this group of diseases.
Comfortable breathing is possible when the lungs, and surrounding muscles and joints, can move freely as air enters and exits. Lung disease causes trouble breathing when the lung tissue itself does not function normally. In time, people with lung disease may also develop reduced flexibility of the muscles and joints around the rib cage.
Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy (OMPT) treatments aim to improve the flexibility and function of the muscles and joints. Lindsay combines her speciality in OMPT with her prior clinical experience in pulmonary rehabilitation and the breath retraining principles of Pilates to deliver personalized treatments to people with difficulty breathing, as a complement to their usual medical care. Patients have reported an increase in the comfort of their breathing, a reduced feeling of stiffness, and an increase in the strength of their voice after receiving OMPT treatment to the areas around their rib cage.
